The topic of borders I would say has always been a complicated topic especially because throughout history many wars started and were fought over borders. This is especially true with Native American communities many of the resistances that arose between the Natives and the Euro-Americans occurred because the Euro-Americans were disrespecting the boundaries of the Native American reservations and encroaching on their land. However, the boundaries of these reservations were also seen as a way for Americans to confine and regulate the Natives in a specific area of their choosing. Even with this existing border that defines the area of the reservations, there will always be an invisible boundary between the Native Americans and the Americans. They will always be considered different and therefore a line will be drawn between them and white people separating them. This could be said about all other races of people living in the US today. This is seen through the segregation of black people, and how there is still a bit of this segregation existing today seen in the way that they are treated.
Another topic pertaining to the border that I thought was interesting was the difference between the US and Canadian borders and the Mexican border. I guess I never really thought about or seen how big of a difference there is between the borders. Living so close to the Canadian border I should have seen how easy it is to get past the border with nothing but my driver’s license. While on the other hand, I have heard the horrible things people had to go through just to pass through the Mexican border. Maybe this huge difference in the heavy surveillance at the two borders is due to who lives on the other side of the border. This could be due to the invisible boundary between races, and this complicated system of border control is supposed to regulate how much of this different race can enter the country. Maybe this difference in the borders could be due to conflicts the US has had with Mexico in the past. Now that I am thinking about it in my history classes we have talked about conflicts between Mexico and the US but I don’t think I’ve ever heard about the US having conflicts with Canada pertaining to borders.
