The twentieth century is commonly referred to as the “American Century ” characterized by the United States embarking on a phase of imperialism following the Spanish American War era. Take a moment to contemplate the themes covered this week and their significance in shaping borders and boundaries while considering how U.S. settler colonialism contributed to imperialism’s expansion. There will forever be a division between Native Americans and Americans despite borders because of their perceived differences. The distinction between the borders of the United States and Canada compared to the border with Mexico is quite intriguing. Residing near the border allows for observation of the relative ease in crossing with just a drivers license. In contrast, the experience at the border involves encountering challenging circumstances. This disparity may be attributed to underlying distinctions and the intricate border control mechanisms that dictate entry allowances based on ethnicity. Throughout the century, the importance of Native sovereignty and border enforcement was often overlooked in making decisions about immigration. Native individuals living along the border of California and Mexico frequently face mistreatment and misidentification by Border Patrol agents and law enforcement officers. Birth certificates weren’t consistently provided for births at home in reservations. Certain reservations are impacted by borders limiting their inhabitants ability to move freely across their own lands. There has been a debate surrounding the establishment of boundaries for national parks up to the day that remains unresolved for many stakeholders involved in the decision making process. The Blackfoot people once inhabited Glacier National Park. Were subsequently displaced from their lands and relocated to a designated reservation area as part of historical events. Today, within the parks, their legacy primarily endures through performances and services provided to visitors seeking entertainment and information about their heritage.
