Turner’s frontier thesis is another of many infuriating things overpassed throughout history.  Within Turner’s words and the way he portrayed his words, he had every intention of creating this ideal world for the white men to come and inflict their ways of life onto what was already very culturally rich and special lands to many native americans. With his words, he created a narrative of “winning the West” which portrayed so many indigenous Americans as just an object. He dehumanizes them and turns them into a sort of boogie man and or savage/horrible people. He opened the floodgates to the incoming civilizations who believed that the West was theirs for the taking and that they should because they were “superior” to the natives.  He led bigotry and colonialism right to the doorstep of the West and that would in turn almost eradicate whatever was still left of native peoples both physically and spiritually. This was also a mindset that was not just in America since we also learned that the same situation was unfolding in Hawaii and the Kānaka Maoli people, but since this idea of the “right” to this “untamed” land was within so many incoming individuals’ heads it led to what was the horrific event that was the Wounded Knee Massacre. It’s honestly such a disappointing fact that many students now and probably in the future have had and will continue to have their curriculum stop mentioning native Americans after the Wounded Knee massacre like they haven’t contributed anything else to history. I believe that historians the American people and the American school system should do better and have to do better. I think a good start would be just to continue teaching past the Wounded Knee Massacre. They could fix this problem by teaching our youths and ourselves just what incredible events and contributions Indigenous people have given to history in the last fifty to one hundred years, and not just teach it but celebrate what has been done and what has been sacrificed to get here.
